Parthenogenesis and Sex-Ratio Distorting Bacteria in Empoasca (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) Leafhoppers

چکیده

Abstract Endosymbiotic bacteria can induce parthenogenesis in many haplo-diploid species, but little is known about their role asexual reproduction diplodiploids. Bacteria are essential for the lineages of springtails and booklice, possibly some weevils, whether they causative agent remains to be proven. This would require comparing unisexual forms closely related bisexual such model species very rare. Empoasca leafhoppers from Madeira Archipelago provide an excellent case test bacterial infections cause parthenogenesis. Here we examined diversity sex-distorting bacteria, Wolbachia, Cardinium, Rickettsia, Arsenophonus, three apomictic morphotypes (A, B, C) relatives Empoasca. Wolbachia group B was present all species. Rickettsia were only restricted forms, suggesting association between infection reproduction. In addition, found Asaia third time Cicadellidae, although this may have do with reproductive mode its host. Adult females morphotype C reared on plants watered tetracycline solution did not result production male offspring. To our knowledge, first study suggest a possible XO/XX diplodiploid based range sex ratio-distorting bacteria.

Brochosomes protect leafhoppers (Insecta, Hemiptera, Cicadellidae) from sticky exudates.

Leafhoppers (Insecta, Hemiptera, Cicadellidae) actively coat their integuments with buckyball-shaped submicron proteinaceous secretory particles, called brochosomes. Here, we demonstrate that brochosomal coats, recently shown to be superhydrophobic, act as non-stick coatings and protect leafhoppers from contamination with their own sticky exudates--filtered plant sap. We exposed 137 wings of Al...

New eurymeline leafhoppers (Hemiptera, Cicadellidae, Eurymelinae) from Eocene Baltic amber with notes on other fossil Cicadellidae

Two new extinct fossil cicadellid taxa from Eocene Baltic amber, representing the subfamily Eurymelinae (sensu lato), are described and illustrated, and their relationships to modern leafhoppers are discussed. Eoidiocerus emarginatusgen. and sp. n. is the oldest known representative of the tribe Idiocerini. The new genus resembles some modern Afrotropical and Indomalayan idiocerine genera but d...

Seasonal progression of sex ratio and phytoplasma infection in Scaphoideus titanus Ball (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae).

The differences between the seasonal occurrence and likelihood of being infected by FD phytoplasmas, of male and female Scaphoideus titanus Ball, were investigated. Sex ratio (male: female) was calculated by counting males and females sampled by means of yellow sticky traps and sweep-nets and from adults derived from hatched eggs in field-collected grapevine wood. PCR essays were performed to t...

Observations of unusual acoustic behaviour in two Australian leafhoppers (Hemiptera; Cicadellidae)

Acoustic substrate-borne communication between hoppers has been well studied with certain patterns of acoustic behaviour considered typical. We report observations of acoustic behaviour in two Australian leafhoppers, Stenocotis depressa (Walker) and Austrolopa brunensis Evans, that are markedly atypical. Two types of unusual acoustic behaviour were observed: female–female interactions, and the ...
